Veggie Spy & Versatile Vegan

Off the Radar Greens

We are fortunate to have greens year-round at the Market and here are some slightly obscure ones you may have missed. Please give these lonely greens some attention, your taste buds will thank you!

Hakurei Greens

Hakurei (or Tokyo) turnips were developed in Japan and are known for their mild, sweet flavor. The greens are edible and have a slightly bitter flavor with a peppery zing like mustard greens. The bitterness diminishes with cooking – sauté as you would any green. Get Hakurei greens at 9 N Farm.

Red Stem Spinach

The stems are indeed red in this sweet variety of spinach that brightens up any salad. Use as you would other spinach varieties. Head to Rock Dove for Red Stem Spinach.

Sorrel

Sorrel is a leafy green that is part herb and part vegetable. It has a surprisingly bright, tart, lemony flavor that works great for putting zip into salads and other dishes. The Versatile Vegan has a more unusual option with this Chilled Lemony Wood Sorrel Soup. Visit Franklinton for  sorrel, and lots of other greens too!

Souper Heroes Finale — Chili Cook-Off

Saturday, April 20, 11am - 1pm, is the next, and final, Souper Heroes event at the Indoor Worthington Farmers Market (inside The Shops at Worthington Place) – and it’s a Chili Cook-Off!

ALL types of chili are welcome and encouraged! If you call it chili, then so do we – and we want to taste it!

  • Beans, No Beans, All Kinds of Beans

  • Meat, No Meat, Weird Meat (well, maybe not too weird - LOL)

    • beef and pork are excellent in meat-based chilis, but we’d love to see bison, lamb, goat, venison, chicken, turkey and plant-based “meats,” too!

  • Hot & Spicy, Mild & Mellow, and Everything in Between

  • World Cuisine Inspired (Indian, Asian, African, Spanish, Caribbean . . . the possibilities are endless!)

  • A Little Something Extra – Optional Toppings Welcome!

We’ve snagged several local celebrity chefs as judges (all have appeared on national TV cooking shows!). They’ll be looking for flavor, aroma, texture and creativity and chili that is well-seasoned (not necessarily spicy, just really tasty!) with broad appeal.

  • Judge’s Choice Winner will receive a framed award, a Worthington Farmers Market “swag bag” with select market merchandise and a $100 gift certificate!

  • People’s Choice Winner will receive a framed award, a Worthington Farmers Market “swag bag” with select market merchandise and a $50 gift certificate!

  • And, of course, Lifetime Bragging Rights for both winners!

Enter your winning chili here: https://forms.gle/gt269Pfy7wgcRLS36

Contributions to the Donation Slow Cooker benefit the Worthington Resource Pantry.

Sign up to make a chili for the April 20 event and get a FREE Souper Heroes t-shirt! (While supplies last).
