Warm Up with Hot Drinks and Holiday Spirits!

December brings winter’s chill and one way to stay snug is with a hot drink, kicked up with a libation! There’s plenty of options at the Market for the makings of a hot beverage to enjoy by the fireplace or in the midst of a snowy hike.

The king (or is it the queen?) of hot winter beverages has got to be hot chocolate. Gluten-free and celiac-friendly baker Sitara’s Sweets offers a powdered mix that they suggest can be spiked with peppermint schnapps or vanilla vodka. Artisan baker Shepard Baking has a mix with chocolate from small-batch producer Dandelion Chocolate Co. Pump it up a notch with whiskey or rum! Artisan chocolatier Miam Cacao produces chocolate nibs in a mix for rich sipping chocolate, which is enjoyed like espresso and can be spiked as well.

Hot coffee and locally roasted beans are available from Ramble Coffee and Silverbridge.  Whiskey in coffee is delightful, such as in this traditional Irish Coffee recipe.  Or, take a cue from the Versatile Vegan and try this vegan version

New vendor Teas Your Spirit suggests you “Boost Your Booze” by pouring gin, tequila, vodka, or other spirits into their bottled fruit/spice fusions and soak for 24 hours. Yummy! They also have the mixings and recipes to make mamajuana, a spiced rum beverage popular in the Dominican Republic. Tea lovers should also visit Foraged & Sown for their extensive tea selection. The Boreal Tea blend pairs perfectly with a gin and tonic!

The Versatile Vegan suggests apple cider fans try one of these Spiked Apple Cider recipes. Cider is available at Gillogly and Moreland Fruit Farm. Another spirited fruit option for those who are a little more ambitious is this Homemade Pear Liqueur you can make with pears from Gillogly.

Other Finds

This is the last week Raber Organics will be at the Winter Market. Say goodbye and try some cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes. But don’t worry, they will be back in the spring with more organic produce! Franklinton still has some tomatoes, as well as bok choy, sweet potatoes, and spinach. 9N Farm has celery, carrots, and a wide variety of squash. Rock Dove has black radishes and a variety of greens. New vendor The Chili Chic has beautiful, purple holly berry sauerkraut.

Remember there are several vendors in the south parking lot including  Gillogly Orchards, RaberOrganics, and Oink Moo Cluck. Can’t find a winter Market vendor? Feel free to flag down a volunteer or visit the Information Booth which is to the east of the central fountain.
