Travel the World at the Market!

Do you have a hankering to take a break from chilly Columbus and see the world? No need for plane tickets, just visit the Market for an international taste adventure!

Start with authentic Mexican Tamales from Patty’s Kitchen. Get the sweet potato ones warm for an immediate breakfast or take some home frozen to enjoy later. Rumor has it they make the best tamales in Columbus!

Next check out Southern Ting for sauces that are a fusion between traditional Southern and Caribbean cuisines, The Every-Ting sauce is Carolina BBQ with allspice and scotch bonnet peppers for a Caribbean kick!

While you’re there, (literally) next door are the Dominican inspired  teas and fusions from Teas Your Spirits

Italian rainbow cookies consist of  three fluffy tri-color almond cake layers covered with chocolate. They were created by Italian immigrants in New York City and Angie’s Rainbow Cookies uses grandma’s recipe to make them in many delicious variations!

Sweet lovers should also check out Tulip Café for authentic Turkish Delight  confections that are amazing. And they have many other Turkish items such as potato borek, a savory Turkish pastry rarely found outside Turkey!

Enjoy Maani’s Indian Spice Blends that include Tiki Masala and Curried Chickpea. Owner and chef Monika Arora will be appearing as a contestant on Gordon Ramsey’s Top Level Chef episode airing February 1! Congratulations, Monika!

The Market is Hyper-Local!

Supporting local farmers and food artisans is a bedrock principle of our Market. When producers use ingredients from other Market vendors, that’s hyper-local! Hats off to Sweet Thing Gourmet for finding ingredients from other vendors every season. These include apples from Gillogly Orchards for jam, eggs for biscotti from Red Moon Ranch and Sipple, and coming soon The Benjamin rhubarb jam will have carrots from 9N Farm!

SNAP/EBT & Produce Perks

If you're shopping at the market with SNAP/EBT, you can get extra mushrooms, sprouts and microgreens — and many other fresh fruits and vegetables — FREE. Check out https://buff.ly/2SKajLm to learn how.

Mushrooms are a nutritious and environmental powerhouses! Here are some ways to use mushrooms: Add them to soups and stews, grill mushrooms and add them to a sandwich, roast them, stuff them, use them as toppings! What are your favorite ways to eat mushrooms?

You can grow sprouts and microgreens all year across Ohio, including from the comfort of a windowsill. Here are some of the differences between sprouts and microgreens:

  • Sprouts are just-germinated seeds, usually ready to eat in less than a week. They are usually grown in water/jars and don’t need sunlight. They are higher (than microgreens) in amino acids.

  • Microgreens are typically grown in soil and include the first leaves of a baby plant. They need sunlight. They are higher (than sprouts) in carotenoids and organic acids, with low sugar.

Have you tried them? What are your favorites?
