Celebrate Earth Month by Being a Sustainable Market Shopper!

Since April is Earth Month, this is the perfect time to review tips on how to be more sustainable when you shop at the Market. We’re betting there is at least one nugget here you may have forgotten!

Bring your own (BYO) shopping bag is second nature to many folks. We’ve started collecting data at the market and early indications are that over 70% of shoppers at the Winter Market walk in the door with a bag! If you are in search of a cool canvas tote, get a Worthington Farmers Market bag at the Info. Booth!

And don’t forget to bring smaller bags for your produce. Every time you don’t get a plastic bag from the farmer, you’re doing them and the planet a favor!

BYO cup for enjoying drinks at the Market. Whether it’s coffee from Silver Bridge or Ramble, or iced tea from Teas Your Spirits, BYO beats a single-use cup every time!

When you purchase a product in a jar or other glass container, ask the vendor if they will take it back for reuse later. Many vendors do take back glass or other containers, wash them, and reuse them for the next happy customer!

Keeping food  fresh longer saves you money and helps reduce food waste. Nearly 1 million pounds of food waste goes to the Franklin County landfill every day. Following these tips will prolong the life of veggies and other goodies. Also, courtesy of SWACO, you can pick up a brochure at the Info. Booth with even more food storage ideas!

If you have the room for it, consider backyard composting for your food scraps and coffee grounds. It’s easy and you’ll have free compost for your garden!

As with us, produce that doesn’t look “perfect” has nothing wrong with it. Embrace veggie imperfection and go ahead and buy that goofy looking carrot or that ugly turnip! They taste just as good, are just as nutritious, and don’t belong in the landfill!

Finally, those cool glasses you used to enjoy the eclipse are not recyclable at the curbside. You can either (a) put them in a drawer and remember where you left them for 20 years when you’ll need them next, or (b) drop them off at the Info Booth where they will join millions more that are sent to another country with an eclipse coming up!

Happy Earth Month and we’ll see you at the Market!
