Everyone Has a Seat at Over the Counter

Just south of Old Worthington, in the Sharon Square Shopping Center, sits a neighborhood favorite for lunch, dinner, and drinks: Over the Counter.

The name and design of Over the Counter nods to the space’s original purpose as the Nicklaus Pharmacy. The family-run pharmacy, owned by Charlie and Robert Nicklaus, came complete with a soda fountain. Today Over the Counter honors that community spirit by welcoming friends and families with hearty food and fun drinks. As their menu says: “Everyone has a seat at the counter.”

Much like the pharmacy before it, Over the Counter indeed features a long counter. Some of the best seats in the house are there, where you’re face-to-face with friendly bartenders and a bank of TVs showing sports, cartoons, classic sitcoms, and everything in-between.

Over the Counter’s menu features all your favorites, starting with appetizers like jumbo chicken wings, pretzel bites, chicken tenders, and French fries. Ask any of the servers and they’ll definitely recommend the fried pickles: long dill spears breaded and fried crispy, then served with buttermilk ranch.

The main menu is rounded out with a collection of soups and salads, but the big focus is on sandwiches. There is something for everyone on the menu: burgers, BLTs, sloppy joes, pulled pork, buffalo chicken wraps, hot dogs, turkey, tuna salad, you name it. You’ll find a number of popular local ingredients featured, too, like Schmidt’s signature Bahama Mama sausage on a bun with sauerkraut.

Some of the more popular picks include the corned beef reuben, stacked high on rye with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. The Where’s Waldo features a thick slice of grilled bologna made by Falter’s Fine Meats, topped with bourbon onions on grilled jalapeno cheddar bread. (The dish gets its name from the G&R Tavern in Waldo, Ohio, long-time home to a famous bologna sandwich.) Servers will also recommend the Fish Sammy with hand-breaded and fried cod layered with fries (you read that right), pickles, and homemade tartar sauce.

If you’re really feeling hungry, you can order a full dinner like the fish and chips, New York strip steak, or creamy mac and cheese with toppings like pulled pork, chicken, tofu, broccoli. Don’t forget the full bar, with cocktails, wines, and a collection of Ohio beers on tap.

And kids aren’t left behind, either! The kid’s menu is loaded with hamburgers, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, mac and cheese.

Over the Counter also serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a narrow window but worth making the effort! You’ll find creative dishes like donut kebabs, breakfast burgers, chicken and waffles, corned beef hash, huevos rancheros, steak and eggs.

If you’ve never been, it’s time to grab your seat at Over the Counter!
