LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER!

“Let the good times roll, indeed! Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, falls on Tuesday, February 16 this year. A number of businesses will celebrate the holiday with specials, but La Chatelaine French Bakery & Bistro draws on a deep history to present a collection of food and drink specials for the holiday.

Gallette des Rois, or King Cakes

King cakes are handmade puff pastries layered almond paste and baked until a delightful golden brown. A small porcelain character – often a little charm or a baby Jesus – is baked inside; the lucky eater who discovers it in their piece is crowned king or queen.

La Chatelaine actually offers king cakes starting on Epiphany (January 6) and makes them available all the way through Mardi Gras. The nine-inch cakes serve 6-8 pieces, and are served in a beautiful box decorated with a crown. They retail at $25 apiece and need to be ordered 24 hours in advance.

Bottled Hurricane Punch Cocktails

The bistro is also selling individual bottled servings of the classic New Orleans cocktail, the hurricane, for $5 each. One is included in the Dinner Party Bundle, but you can order extra on your own. The fruity cocktail is said to be a creation at Pat O’Brien’s Bar in the 1940s in New Orleans; it blends light and dark rums with lemon juice and passion fruit syrup.
