Located on Proprietors Road, appropriately just across the street from active railroad tracks, the Central Ohio Model Railroad Club actively supports and encourages the hobby of model railroading with meetings, displays, and other activities. While the club is based on membership, they are open to visitors regularly every week, and often do open houses around the holiday season.
According to Mike Martin, the current club president, the Central Ohio Model Railroad Club was first founded over two decades ago in 2002. Martin joined in 2019 and became club president in January of 2023. Right now the club has 91 members.
The club hosts regular meetings, although they are open to visitors Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Guests can view the multiple layouts, from tiny Z-scale to larger O-scale trains. Throughout the space there are multiple rooms with a variety of tracks, all buzzing with trains running through detailed setups.
Interested railroaders might consider becoming members! The club offers student, individual, and family memberships.
“Membership is pretty simple,” says Martin. “Ideally, a person would visit us on a visitor night, meet some other members, get a look at the place, ask some questions, run some model trains on one of our layouts, and then fill out an application. That person would go on a 90-day probationary period, during which time they’d come to the club, run trains, interact with other members and contribute to the club. After 90 days the board of directors vote on accepting them into full membership and then recommend the acceptance of them to the membership to vote them in.”
