Green on the Green and first outdoor farmers market take place on May 7.

Spring has sprung in Central Ohio and with it comes the promise of flowers, al fresco dining and outdoor festivals. Eager to kick off the season in style, the folks at Big Green Head, the Old Worthington Partnership and the Worthington Farmers Market have been busy getting ready for this year’s Green on the Green and the first outdoor farmers market, which are both scheduled for May 7.

Green on the Green

This annual, one-day event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Worthington's Village Green, seeks to inspire people to “go green” in their everyday lives. From implementing simple steps to being informed about the latest in green technology, visitors will learn from 70 + eco-friendly vendors just how easy, fun and cost-effective sustainable living can be.

Here are a few highlights you won’t want to miss:

  • Community Computer Alliance Recycle Drive – Looking to unload some of your old electronic devices but unsure of how or where to properly dispose of them? Community Computer Alliance (CCA) can help. The non-profit organization refurbishes and recycles used electronic equipment like computers, laptops and iPads, and then donates them to those in need.

CCA will be collecting items in the parking lot of Ace Hardware from 8 a.m. to noon and will have a booth set up on the Village Green. For more information about the work of CCA, including a full list of items they accept, visit their website.

  • Bike Park– One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to practice green living – while also doing something good for your body – is to start pedaling. Thanks in part to Worthington's close proximity to Olentangy Trail, the city boasts a robust community of bikers. In an effort to encourage local folks to leave the car at home, the Old Worthington Partnership will host a “bike park”, complete with racks and locks, on the northeast corner of the Village Green.
  • Family-Friendly Activities – Green on the Green provides the perfect opportunity to teach tomorrow’s generation how to conserve resources and care for the earth. Visit the Worthington Schools booth to learn how kids can practice green living, snuggle some bunnies at the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue booth or dance along to Mr. Eric’s Music.

Sponsorships and booths are still available. For more information, visit www.biggreenhead.com.

Worthington Farmers Market - Outdoor Market

On May 7, the Worthington Farmers Market moves outdoors for the first time this year, sharing the day with Green on the Green. If you’ve never visited the Worthington Farmers Market, you’re in for a treat. Boasting more than 70 vendors from the greater Columbus area, the year-round market is brimming with fresh produce, jams and jellies, honey, maple syrup, meats, eggs, flowers and other specialty items.

The first outdoor market will take place from 8 a.m. to noon along High Street in Downtown Worthington, just steps from Green on the Green. For more information, including a full list of weekly vendors, visit www.worthingtonfarmersmarket.blogspot.com

10430051_420303858136241_341714240824614639_nForget about what Kermit the Frog says; it IS easy being green. To prove it, the folks at the Old Worthington Partnership (formerly the Olde Worthington Business Association), Big Green Head, Plant Fest and the Worthington Farmers Market have teamed up to host two springtime events—Green on the Green and Plant Fest. Green on the Green

Green on the Green is a free, one-day community festival that offers visitors a variety of ways to “go green” in their everyday lives. The annual event, which gathers companies, organizations and community groups from all over Columbus, will take place on Saturday, May 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Worthington’s historic Village Green.

This year’s theme, “Engaged and in the Green,” speaks to the underlying mission behind the event’s organizer, Big Green Head. “Quite simply, we want people to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to sustainable living,” said Karen Ferris of Big Green Head. “We hope that through events like this, folks will become more educated about green living and will be inspired to get involved and to make changes in their own life.”

For the past five years, Ferris and her team have worked hard to grow Green on the Green. Hosted in conjunction with the Worthington Farmers Market and Plant Fest, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. From educational demonstrations by organizations like the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association and the Ohio Wildlife Center, to presentations by local schools and community groups, to a host of green vendors and exhibitors, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Participants will have the opportunity to shop for re-purposed or recycled items from a number of local Worthington businesses, experience a walking garden tour and learn about simple ways to conserve resources like water and energy. Additionally, the Arch City Rowing Club will host a spring plant sale, and Shimmy Mob, a national belly dancing company, will surprise unsuspecting visitors with a flash mob.

Worthington’s Village Green is located at St. Rt. 161 and High Street in Worthington.

Plant Fest

Calling all green thumbs! Plant Fest is your one-stop shop for everything from plants and hanging baskets to fruits, vegetables and gardening and landscaping supplies. Visitors will have the opportunity to shop for annuals and perennials, herbs, garden art and decorations, as well as jewelry, candles and so much more. The event, which will be integrated into the popular Worthington Farmers Market, will also feature live music and delicious food vendors. And remember, Plant Fest takes place the day before Mother’s Day – so stop by and pick up something your mom is sure to love.

Plant Fest takes place at the south end of Worthington’s Village Green.
