A Summer Saturday in Worthington

_02Let’s face it. It doesn’t get much better than Worthington in the summertime. Sure, the community has plenty to offer any time of the year, but the fun times really heat up during the warm-weather months. From outdoor concerts and festivals to patio dining and shopping the farmers market, there’s no shortage of activities to add to your list of summer fun. To get you started, we created this lineup of things to do on a summer Saturday in Worthington. Shop the market.

Start your day with a visit to the Worthington Farmers Market on High Street in Old Worthington. This is the largest market of its kind in Central Ohio, and it attracts some of the area’s finest vendors. Grab some delicious strawberries from Rhoads Farm or Crum Strawberry Farm. Sip a warm cup of coffee from Silver Bridge Coffee Company. Or take home your very own bison patties from the Ohio Bison Farm. With more than 70 vendors, your biggest challenge will be figuring out how to carry your purchases back to the car.

Eat on the patio.

Worthington has some of the finest patio dining in Central Ohio, beginning with The Worthington Inn and La Chatelaine French Bakery & Bistro. Both of these establishments boast front row seating for the farmers market, so you can people-watch all morning long. The farmer’s breakfast (think eggs, home fries, bacon and fruit) at The Worthington Inn is a great option for breakfast lovers, but the menu also offers a host of salads, soups and sandwiches if you prefer lunch. Down the street, La Chatelaine stays true to its French heritage with homemade croissants for breakfast and baguette sandwiches for lunch.

Grab a snack.

No time to linger? Then a quick visit to Sassafras Bakery to satisfy your sweet tooth with a cookie, scone or piece of pie is in order. Wash it down with warm Café Brioso coffee or cold milk from Snowville Creamery. You’ll naturally want to take some delicious goodies home to enjoy later in the day. We suggest the kitchen sink granola bars made with nut butters from the Krema Nut Company.

Learn about the history.

The city of Worthington is overflowing with history. You can learn about it firsthand at the Worthington Historical Society, which is located in the Old Rectory on West New England Avenue — a short walk from High Street. The building is also home to the Doll Museum and a gift shop. The Doll Museum at the Old Rectory features a collection of 19th and 20th century dolls, as well as rotating exhibits.

Explore the arts.

Also within walking distance from the downtown area, the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center is a contemporary, multidisciplinary facility for the performing, visual and digital arts. The 20,000-square-foot building boasts a 213-seat theatre, an exhibition gallery, four classrooms, a digital imaging studio, dance studio and rotating exhibitions throughout the facility. Bottom line: There’s always something happening at the MAC.

Wine and dine.

Worthington is teeming with great eateries. In addition to those we already mentioned, you may want to try The Whitney House, Rivage Atlantique or The Old Bag of Nails. Families especially love Dewey’s Pizza followed by a large serving of chocolate-chip laden ice cream at Graeter’s Ice Cream. But if you’re looking for something a little different and incredibly fun, head over to House Wine where you can taste 24 different wines from the Enomatic wine dispenser. If wine isn’t your thing, simply choose from 12 different craft beers to enjoy in the shop.

You may decide to end your day with a stroll along High Street to the historic Village Green. Or you could kick up your heels to some live music at The Worthington Inn or Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza and Live Music. Whatever your style, there’s a little something for everyone to do in Worthington. And it all comes alive during the summer months.
