Window Shopping for a Cause

Window contest 6Window contest 1Window contest 2Window contest 7It’s a Wonderful Window Contest – Shop Local and Everyone Wins Move over Macy’s. Downtown Worthington is the place to be for prime window-shopping this holiday season. Thanks to the Old Worthington Partnership’s first annual “It’s a Wonderful Window Contest,” folks who shop at their favorite Worthington businesses now through December 26, 2015 will enjoy festive window displays and the opportunity to support numerous local charities.

The idea to host a window-decorating contest is part of the Old Worthington Partnership's ongoing efforts to increase foot traffic in the downtown area. It brings merchants and nonprofits together for an event the entire community can support.

Here's how it works:

This past week, 23 local merchants and 26 local charities combined efforts to create magical window displays at shops, restaurants and businesses throughout Old Worthington. During the Holiday Open House, the displays were unveiled and the voting started.

To get involved, simply visit the participating merchants and vote for your favorite display using a ballot box located inside each shop. Each vote requires a minimum contribution of one dollar ($1 = one vote), and you may vote as many times as you like and for as many windows as you want. Here's the best part: 100% of the proceeds collected at each merchant will go directly to the charity that helped create the display.

From adorable pet-themed windows at both Magic Cruises and Tours and The Candle Lab, to an elaborate train display at Denig Jewelers and a whimsical Santa’s Mail Room window at Igloo Letterpress, you’ll have a hard time choosing a favorite.

“We are so pleased with the entries in this year’s window contest,” said Jennifer Lyon, Old Worthington Partnership board member. “We had a fabulous turnout at the Holiday Open House and are thrilled to offer yet another great reason for folks to visit Worthington during the holidays.”

Everyone Wins

At the end of the month, the Old Worthington Partnership will announce a contest winner and award the participating merchant and charity a beautiful bronze window to proudly display until passing it along to next year’s winner. Although only one window will win the grand prize, all of the participants deserve praise and recognition for the hard work and creativity that went into each display. “The windows are so well done; you’ll definitely want to visit them all,” Lyon added.

Next Stop: Worthington

FAM Trip 1 Worthington is a popular destination on the Experience Columbus FAM Trip

On August 28, Experience Columbus once again included Worthington in its FAM (familiarization) trip, noting the city as one of the most popular Columbus-area destinations for the group tour market. The theme of this year's tour was "How did they do that?" And Worthington was the perfect fit with several experiential attractions like the American Whistle Corporation, The Candle Lab and Igloo Letterpress. This year tour attendees represented six tour companies from five states, including California.

After experiencing several areas of Columbus, the operators arrived in Worthington at the American Whistle Corporation where every tour begins with these words: "Ever wonder how the ball gets inside a whistle?" The personally guided 45-minute factory tour shows the inner workings of a small but thriving American manufacturing plant and entertains with interesting factoids about the whistles and the machinery.

From there, the participants headed over to The Candle Lab where they chose from more than 120 scents to create their very own custom fragrance candle. And at the nearby Igloo Letterpress, the attendees made their own cards on antique printing presses. Owner Allison Chapman shared her personal story about coming to Worthington and how she inherited her grandfather's antique printing presses. She then took the tour operators for a glimpse at the future home of Igloo Letterpress on High Street.

After a full morning of activity, the tour operators walked down the street to The Worthington Inn for lunch. The Worthington Inn has been rated one of the top ten restaurants in Columbus since 2004, and executive chef Tom Smith, who believes strongly in the farmer-to-chef concept, works with local purveyors to feature locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats and other food products.

FAM trips are designed to increase product or destination knowledge. In this instance, the primary goal of the trip was to sell Greater Columbus as an exciting destination for future tour group visits, and Worthington was honored to be a part of the Experience Columbus itinerary.

"The Convention & Visitors Bureau of Worthington is proud to showcase the variety of attractions that Worthington has to offer the group tour market," said Executive Director Mindy Mace. "Our experiential packages are unique and always receive rave reviews from the tour operators who visit Worthington during these FAM tours."
