Griswold's Amazing Race Kicks Off January 9, 2013
In early 2013, the Griswold Center is encouraging participants to set their sights on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The bridge, which turned 75 in 2012, is a feat that people said could never be accomplished. They hope it will serve as an inspiration for reaching your personal fitness goals in 2013.
Griswold's Amazing Race is a 10-week adventure where participants "race" 2,432 miles to the Golden Gate Bridge. They accumulate "miles" by exercising, attending health and wellness programs, and answering fitness/wellness-related trivia. At the end of the challenge, which runs from January 14 to March 23, a celebration event honors the participants with prizes, t-shirts and other goodies. A special guest speaker highlights the event. Past year's speakers have included Andrea Cambern and Jack Park.
Designed for individuals 55 years and older, but open to anyone, the Amazing Race begins with a kickoff on January 9 at 12:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Community Center. Participants in this free event can pick up their passports and set their goals at that time. The kickoff will include giveaways and a special lunch followed by a guest speaker who will inspire the participants to reach their goals.
Here's a look at the three components of the program:
- Fitness: Each week participants face a fitness challenge. For instance, they might be challenged to complete two sets of two repetitions of a chair stand, which could earn them 50 miles.
- Detour: Known as the educational piece, participants earn points simply by attending a presentation on health and fitness.
- Roadblock: This is the trivia or mental component where participants are asked to research the answer to a specific health-and-fitness question.
components make it possible for people of varying fitness levels to participate. And a conversion chart is available throughout the event so participants can convert various physical activities into "miles."
